25 Sep
Summary
- Matthew Mayich collapsed during an August workout in extreme heat.
- ASU's review did not assign responsibility for the player's collapse.
- Coach Greg Powers refused to answer questions about the incident.
Matthew Mayich, a recent transfer to the Arizona State University hockey program, is currently on life support after collapsing during an August workout session. The strenuous, roughly 45-minute regimen took place in the desert heat and was reportedly led by a former Green Beret. Mayich fell ill toward the end of the workout and was subsequently transported to a local hospital. His family and legal counsel do not anticipate his recovery.
A review conducted by ASU's athletic department apparently did not assign fault for Mayich's collapse. However, it was noted that the hockey coaches had not reviewed the Green Beret's workout plan. Head Coach Greg Powers has retained his position.
During a recent virtual press conference, Coach Powers faced questions from reporter Katie Strang regarding his silence on the incident. Powers cited an ongoing university review and campus police investigation, stating he was "not able to answer questions about it in any way." He offered a prepared statement expressing gratitude for the university's support system for Mayich and the team.
