Hockey Coach's $1.3M Exit After Player's Collapse
19 Oct
Summary
- Coach Powers receives over $1.3 million severance package.
- Payout follows a near-fatal workout leaving a player on life support.
- ASU faces scrutiny over workout policies and contractor vetting.
Greg Powers, former head hockey coach at Arizona State University, has secured a separation package exceeding $1.3 million. This agreement comes after a severe incident on August 20, where defenseman Matthew Mayich collapsed during a strenuous outdoor exercise, leading to the player being placed on life support. Mayich's family attorney stated he has no chance of recovery.
Powers' payout includes 75% of his remaining contract, totaling $1,303,125.00, along with $85,000 in earned bonuses. The funds will be disbursed over three years. He was placed on administrative leave on September 30, following accusations that the university concealed details about the workout. An investigation revealed potential policy breaches concerning heat exposure and improper vetting of the contractor who led the exercise.
Players anonymously reported instances of cruelty during the workout, including denied water breaks and ignored signs of distress from Mayich. The university has initiated an independent review of the incident. Powers' last day as coach was October 16, with Dave Hakstol appointed as his successor.
