Astros Future Uncertain: GM & Manager on Hot Seat
6 Jan
Summary
- Owner Jim Crane has not discussed contract extensions for GM and manager.
- Both key baseball figures are entering the final year of their contracts.
- Team's performance this season will determine future decisions on leadership.

Houston Astros owner Jim Crane stated on Monday that no discussions regarding contract extensions for General Manager Dana Brown or Manager Joe Espada have taken place. Both executives are entering the final year of their respective contracts, with their tenures with the team uncertain beyond the conclusion of the upcoming 2026 season.
Despite the team's failure to reach the postseason in the injury-plagued 2025 season, both Brown and Espada were brought back for the last year of their deals. Brown is on a four-year contract signed in 2023, while Espada began a three-year contract in 2024. This situation mirrors past practices under Crane, with former manager Dusty Baker and GM James Click also having worked in seasons without secured future contracts.
Brown, who joined in 2023, has overseen two division titles and a World Series appearance, promoting Espada to manager after the 2023 season. Espada has compiled a 175-148 record in two seasons. Significant offseason changes have been made to coaching staff and injury protocols, but ultimately, on-field results in 2026 will dictate the future of Houston's baseball leadership.
