Villa Secures Maatsen: Contract Talks Underway

Aston Villa is actively engaged in contract extension talks with their key left-back, Ian Maatsen. Maatsen, acquired for £37.5 million from Chelsea in July 2024, has quickly become Unai Emery's first-choice defender in that role. This development follows the summer departure of Lucas Digne to Paris Saint-Germain.

Emery considers Maatsen integral to Villa's future aspirations and has proposed an improved deal, reflecting the player's growing importance. Maatsen's current contract is set to expire in 2030, but the club aims to demonstrate his pivotal status with enhanced terms. He has already featured in both of Villa's Premier League matches this season.

Villa brought in Matteo Ruggeri from Atletico Madrid to compete with Maatsen for the left-back position. Maatsen, who has played in a Champions League final with Borussia Dortmund during a loan spell, has made 92 appearances for Villa, scoring three goals and providing assists.
