Aston Martin Drivers Risk Nerve Damage, Limiting Race Laps
5 Mar
Summary
- Drivers may suffer permanent nerve damage from steering wheel vibrations.
- Aston Martin plans to restrict race laps due to vibration concerns.
- Honda power unit vibrations cause reliability issues and driver discomfort.

Aston Martin has announced significant restrictions on race laps for the upcoming Australian Grand Prix due to severe vibrations affecting their drivers. Team principal Adrian Newey stated that vibrations from the Honda power unit are being transmitted to the chassis, causing issues like falling mirrors and tail lights, and critically, risking permanent nerve damage to drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll.
Alonso reportedly cannot complete more than 25 consecutive laps without risking nerve damage, while Stroll's limit is around 15 laps. This necessitates heavily restricted participation until the vibration source is addressed. The team has faced numerous reliability problems throughout winter testing, limiting their track time, though they have had some success in mitigating vibrations affecting the battery pack.
