The village of Arpookkara is celebrating the ceremonial launch of the Arpookkara Chundan, a 128-foot snake boat built entirely through community funding. This project, representing a dream held for generations, was made possible by approximately 550 families who pooled Rs 65 lakh, with share prices starting at Rs 5,000. The boat, designed to carry 83 oarsmen, five helmsmen, and seven singers, will make its debut on Sunday before competing in the Nehru Trophy Boat Race and other events.
Spearheaded by the Arpookkara Chundan Valla Samithi, the initiative transcended typical patronage, becoming a movement of unity across religious and political lines. Former minister V N Vasavan lauded it as a symbol of community strength, while samithi secretary Arun Mohan aims to expand the shareholder base to 1,000 families. Construction began last September on the banks of a Meenachil River tributary, utilizing traditional methods and locally sourced anjili wood.
The shareholders themselves will row the boat during its initial launch, a ritualistic handover to the Emmanuel Boat Club that will manage its racing season. The club anticipates competing in 12 races, with an estimated season cost of Rs 80 lakh, for which they are seeking sponsorship. Regardless of financial support, the Arpookkara Chundan has already achieved a rare feat by transforming a village's shared ambition into a tangible symbol of collective accomplishment.
