Army Quarterback Shakeup as Hellums Regains Starting Role

As the Army Black Knights prepare to take on the Charlotte 49ers this Saturday, they will be doing so with a different player under center. According to reports, the team is returning to junior Cale Hellums as their starting quarterback, replacing Dewayne Coleman who had started the last two games.

Army's season has been a rollercoaster ride so far. They opened the 2025 campaign with a shocking 30-27 loss to FCS Tarelton State, a team that was in Division II as recently as 2019. However, they followed that up with an almost equally surprising upset of Big 12 opponent Kansas State.

Losses to North Texas and East Carolina followed, but Army got back to their winning ways last week by beating UAB. Now, with Hellums back at the helm, the Black Knights will look to continue that momentum against a Charlotte team that has struggled mightily against the run this season.

On the year, Hellums has thrown for 99 yards and one touchdown, while also rushing for 307 yards and six scores. In contrast, Coleman has been more productive through the air, going 19-of-33 for 273 yards and two touchdowns, but has also thrown two interceptions. Given Charlotte's porous run defense, Army's coaching staff likely believes Hellums' dual-threat ability gives them the best chance to win this weekend.
