Argentina has advanced to their second consecutive FIFA World Cup semi-final, overcoming a significant challenge from Switzerland in a tense match. The team demonstrated remarkable resilience and fighting spirit to secure their progression.
Lionel Messi, the World Cup's leading goal scorer, was instrumental in motivating his squad, even without registering a goal himself. Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez scored in extra time to seal a 3-1 victory against a 10-man Swiss side.
"We knew it was going to be a very intense match. It was important for us to take this step," Messi commented on the hard-fought win. Argentina extended their World Cup scoring streak to 15 successive games.
The squad's mental strength was highlighted by Messi on social media, expressing pride in reaching the semi-finals for the second time. They are set to face rivals England in Atlanta Stadium on Thursday.
Argentina aims to reach the final again and defend their title, a feat not achieved since Brazil in 1962. This achievement would make them the first team in FIFA World Cup history to successfully defend their championship.
