On September 1, 2007, Appalachian State, then a two-time defending FCS champion, achieved one of college football's greatest upsets by defeating No. 5 Michigan. The game, marking the debut on the new Big Ten Network, was expected to be a blowout for the Wolverines.
However, Appalachian State's quarterback Armanti Edwards orchestrated three touchdown drives, giving the Mountaineers a commanding 28-14 lead. Michigan staged a furious rally, led by running back Mike Hart. With just 26 seconds remaining, Appalachian State held a slim 34-32 advantage.
As time expired, Michigan's Jason Gingell attempted a 37-yard field goal to win the game. Appalachian State safety Corey Lynch blocked the kick, sealing the shocking 34-32 upset. This remains the sole loss for college football's winningest program against an FCS team.
