Mohamed Shuts Door on Mexico National Team Job

Argentine manager Antonio Mohamed recently secured his fifth Liga MX championship, leading Toluca to victory in the Apertura 2025 season. Despite his impressive record and calls for him to lead the Mexico national team, Mohamed has firmly rejected the possibility. He expressed that while he might regret it later, he has closed the door on managing El Tri.

Mohamed felt overlooked for the position previously, noting that the opportunity seems to have passed him by. With Javier Aguirre now at the helm, the focus has shifted to a succession plan. Mexico is preparing Rafael Márquez, a legendary former player, to take over as manager after the 2026 World Cup.

Márquez, after managing Barcelona's B team, has joined Aguirre's staff with the understanding that he will inherit the managerial role for the 2030 World Cup cycle. This move signals an attempt by the Mexican Football Federation to establish stability after frequent managerial changes.
