Former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua sustained injuries in a fatal crash that occurred on December 29 in Lagos, Nigeria. Footage from the aftermath shows Joshua being led from a damaged vehicle. He was subsequently taken to the hospital for evaluation and is reported to be in stable condition.
The accident involved a black Lexus Jeep and a stationary commercial Sinotruck on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The Federal Road Safety Corps indicated that excessive speed and a wrongful overtaking maneuver by the Jeep were primary factors in the collision. Tragically, two members of Joshua's team, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, lost their lives in the incident.
Joshua, whose parents are British-Nigerian, had recently returned to the ring after a 15-month layoff, securing a knockout victory on December 19. He is expected to face rival Tyson Fury in 2026. Officials have not yet specified who was driving the vehicle Joshua was traveling in.
