Andretti: Palou's F1 move needs a top team
16 Dec, 2025
Summary
- Alex Palou is too talented for a team rebuild, says Mario Andretti.
- Andretti believes Palou needs a top F1 team to secure wins.
- Palou has won four IndyCar titles, equaling Andretti's achievement.
Mario Andretti, director for Cadillac F1, has shared his perspective on whether the American team considered signing IndyCar champion Alex Palou. Andretti explained that while Palou is undoubtedly talented, his current opportunity with Cadillac F1 might not be the best for his prime years, suggesting he'd be better suited for a top, established Formula 1 team.
Andretti drew parallels to his own career, emphasizing that he moved to F1 with front-running teams like Ferrari and Lotus, which facilitated his championship win. He feels Palou, having achieved four IndyCar titles and equaling legends like himself, deserves a similar path to immediate success in F1.
Despite Palou's previous statements dismissing F1 aspirations in favor of IndyCar, Andretti highly rates the Spaniard's talent and potential longevity in racing. He believes Palou's relaxed attitude and consistent performance indicate a bright future, though he also acknowledged Palou's current strong position with Chip Ganassi Racing.
