Zverev Reaches Tennis Summit: A New World No. 1

Alexander Zverev has officially ascended to the world number one ranking in men's tennis for the first time. This historic achievement sees him become only the second German male player to reach this elite status, following in the footsteps of Boris Becker. Zverev secured his place at the top by defeating Tallon Griekspoor in the Vienna Open on Thursday, October 29, 2026. The new rankings will be published on Monday. Zverev described the feeling of being world number one as "very special" and "amazing," a sentiment he has long strived for.

The 29-year-old's journey to number one has been marked by a stellar season, including significant titles at the French and US Opens. His ascent was also influenced by injuries to fellow top players Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, who had dominated the Grand Slam circuit. Zverev previously came close to the top ranking in 2022 but was hampered by an ankle injury. He reflected that "sometimes you've got to wait for the best things in life," expressing gratitude for his current success.
