Alex Honnold, a renowned climber and father of two, successfully free-soloed Taiwan's Taipei 101 on Saturday, January 24th. This death-defying ascent up one of the world's tallest buildings was broadcast live to viewers via Netflix. The event, initially planned for Friday, January 23rd, was postponed by a day due to weather conditions.
Honnold, who has been climbing for approximately 30 years, expressed that buildings present a steeper challenge than natural rock formations. He stated his primary goal for the climb was not to fall, but also to enjoy the experience and have a good time. This feat follows his previous acclaimed free solo of El Capitan, documented in the Oscar-winning film 'Free Solo.'
The climber, who co-founded the environmental nonprofit Honnold Foundation, noted his curiosity about ascending such a massive structure. Following his descent, Honnold planned to celebrate by taking the elevator down, reuniting with his wife, and enjoying a celebratory meal before returning to his climbing practice.
