Summary

- Alexander Zverev, former champion, defeats Ben Shelton in straight sets
- Alcaraz overcomes early struggles to defeat Alex de Minaur 7-6(5), 6-2

In the opening day of the 2025 ATP Finals on November 11, 2025, world number two Carlos Alcaraz made a solid start to the prestigious year-end tournament with a 7-6(5), 6-2 victory over Alex de Minaur. This marked the first time the young Spaniard had won his opening match at the ATP Finals, having lost to Alexander Zverev and Casper Ruud in his previous two appearances.
Alcaraz faced some early challenges, leading 4-1 in the first set before suffering a sudden dip in form that allowed De Minaur to level the score. However, the 22-year-old regained his touch in the tiebreaker, coming from behind to clinch the opening set. The second set was more straightforward for Alcaraz as he raced away to claim his fifth victory in as many meetings with the Australian.
In the other match of the day, former champion Alexander Zverev also got off to a winning start, defeating American fifth seed Ben Shelton 6-3, 7-6(6) in the Bjorn Borg Group. Zverev broke Shelton twice in the opening set and then held his nerve in the tiebreaker to secure the victory.
Both Alcaraz and Zverev will be looking to build on their strong starts as they aim to lift the prestigious ATP Finals trophy at the end of the week.
