24 Aug
Summary
- Rashid Khan to lead Afghanistan's spin-heavy squad
- Uncapped spinner AM Ghazanfar included in 17-member T20 team
- Afghanistan to play a triangular series before the Asia Cup

In a move that emphasizes their reliance on spin, Afghanistan has unveiled a 17-member T20 squad for the Asia Cup 2025, which is set to take place from September 9-28 in the United Arab Emirates. Veteran spinner Rashid Khan will lead the team, which also features other seasoned slow bowlers like Noor Ahmad, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, and Mohammad Nabi.
The squad's most intriguing inclusion is that of uncapped spinner AM Ghazanfar, who has impressed in his brief ODI career and has played in various T20 leagues around the world, including the Indian Premier League. Afghanistan will be hoping that Ghazanfar's "mystery" spin can complement the experience of the other spinners in the team.
Prior to the Asia Cup, Afghanistan will participate in a triangular series starting on August 29 in Sharjah, which will also feature UAE and Pakistan. This series will serve as a crucial warm-up for the team as they look to fine-tune their preparations for the continental tournament.
Afghanistan has been placed in the tougher Group B of the Asia Cup, alongside Bangladesh, Hong Kong, and Sri Lanka. They will open their campaign against Hong Kong on September 9 in Abu Dhabi.
