Graeme Smith backs Abhishek Sharma for IPL 2026 top scorer

Graeme Smith, the SA20 League Commissioner, has endorsed Abhishek Sharma to finish as the leading run-scorer in the ongoing IPL 2026 season, positioning him ahead of his Sunrisers Hyderabad teammate Heinrich Klaasen.

Klaasen currently tops the Orange Cap standings with 494 runs, while Abhishek trails closely with 475 runs. Smith argues that Abhishek's position as an opener grants him a strategic advantage. This is because top-order batters typically spend more time at the crease, allowing for quicker recovery from any lapses in form, especially on batting-friendly pitches.

Smith also commended Abhishek's fearless and aggressive batting style, particularly his scoring through the square region on the off-side. He noted the general lack of fear among young cricketers today.

Despite his prediction, Smith expressed satisfaction with Klaasen's return to strong form after a less successful SA20 season. Klaasen has been instrumental for Hyderabad, who are currently second on the league table.

Furthermore, Smith lauded Donovan Ferreira for his impactful finishing performances for the Rajasthan Royals, recognizing his power-hitting in the crucial death overs.
