An 83-year-old man is currently cycling from Land's End to John O'Groats with the goal of becoming the fastest octogenarian to complete the renowned route. Eddie McGourley, from Chester-le-Street, County Durham, was inspired to attempt this record after consulting a Guinness World Records book.
McGourley is undertaking this considerable journey to raise funds for St Cuthbert's Hospice. The challenge is particularly poignant as it is in memory of his wife, Winifred, who passed away three years ago. He expressed that his wife would have been proud, recalling her past support when he was a competitive cyclist.
He aims to reach John O'Groats by July 8th, ideally within 10 days. During his youth, McGourley was a successful competitive cyclist, having been crowned North East champion three times. He is supported by a team of five people, including a younger friend who is riding alongside him on this remarkable endeavor.
