Racist Fan Banned 4 Years for Online Abuse
11 Feb
Summary
- Man banned four years for racist messages sent to a player.
- The abuse was directed at Elijah Adebayo after a match.
- Luton Town FC condemns discrimination and supports victims.

Luton Town Football Club has reiterated its condemnation of racist abuse targeting its players and staff following a four-year match ban issued to a fan. The ban was imposed on Connor Butler, 20, from Tyne and Wear, who sent an offensive Instagram message to striker Elijah Adebayo in October 2024. This incident occurred after Adebayo scored in a match against Sunderland.
Butler pleaded guilty to sending a communication of an indecent or offensive nature in December and was initially fined £200. However, he returned to court last week to receive the extended ban. A club spokesperson highlighted the ongoing nature of online abuse faced by their players, noting Adebayo has endured racial abuse annually during his five years with the club.
The club expressed hope that this prosecution and punishment will deter others from engaging in similar online harassment. They affirmed their solidarity with Elijah Adebayo and all discrimination victims, vowing to continue their fight against those who abuse others online.
