A 15-year-old Candidate Master, Vandan Alankar Sawai, achieved one of the biggest upsets of his nascent career by defeating world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen. The match, played on August 18 in Chess.com's Titled Tuesday blitz event, saw Sawai, rated 2,288, overcome Carlsen's 2,823 rating in 50 moves.

Sawai, who entered the game with no pressure, employed his usual opening strategy with the white pieces. The game progressed into a Giuoco Piano after Carlsen responded with e5. Sawai managed his time effectively in the five-minute blitz format, building pressure until Carlsen made a critical error, allowing Sawai to gain a material advantage and eventually force resignation.

Perhaps more astonishing than the victory itself was Sawai's nonchalant reaction. He did not immediately share the news with his parents or coach, instead playing two more rounds and then going to sleep. His father only discovered the win the following day while browsing the chess website. Sawai's mother revealed that they had encouraged him to participate in the tournament, highlighting his quiet composure even after such a monumental win.
