China Unearths World's First Pterosaur Museum

A pioneering science museum focused on pterosaurs, the winged reptiles related to dinosaurs, has opened its doors in China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region. Situated within a national geopark in Hami, a region celebrated for its significant pterosaur fossil discoveries, this institution is the first of its kind globally.

The Hami Pterosaur Museum boasts an expansive exhibition area of approximately 4,600 square meters. Its unique architectural design, featuring six oval halls, evokes the image of pterosaur eggs nestled in the desert landscape.

Visitors can explore a remarkable collection of fossils, including specimens recovered over two decades by the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology. The museum proudly displays the world's first 3D preserved fossilized pterosaur eggs and embryos, alongside large pterosaur specimens making their public debut.

This comprehensive exhibition provides a panoramic recreation of pterosaur life and evolution during the Cretaceous period, approximately 130 million years ago. It highlights China's prominent role in pterosaur research and offers the public an intimate encounter with scientific discovery and ancient life.
