Whales Rebounding: Giants Return to Southern Waters

After devastating 20th-century whaling, blue and fin whales are slowly returning to parts of their historical range in the southeast Atlantic. A comprehensive study analyzing whale records from Namibian and South African waters between 1964 and March 2025 revealed a marked increase in sightings, with 95% occurring since 2012.

Researchers found 12 confirmed blue whale sightings and 76 fin whale sightings. While these numbers indicate a positive trend, neither species has reached its former population size. Blue whales remain critically endangered, with their global population at an estimated 3% of historical levels, though growing annually. Fin whales are listed as vulnerable, with their population at over 30% of pre-whaling numbers and also increasing.

The study, led by Dr. Bridget James, suggests this recovery aligns with predictions as whale populations rebuild. However, researchers caution that increased monitoring may also contribute to the higher number of observed sightings. Modern threats like ship strikes, fishing gear entanglement, underwater noise, pollution, and climate change impacts on krill remain significant concerns.

To support continued recovery, scientists recommend expanding passive acoustic monitoring and requiring trained wildlife observers on commercial vessels. Integrating whale movement data into marine spatial planning is also crucial for protecting vital habitats. These measures are essential to ensure the long-term resilience of these magnificent ocean giants.
