Summary
- New giant exoplanet, Beta Pictoris d, discovered by James Webb Space Telescope.
- Planet identified using atmospheric fingerprinting, a novel detection method.
- Beta Pictoris system now confirmed to host at least three directly imaged planets.

Using the James Webb Space Telescope, astronomers have discovered a new giant exoplanet, named Beta Pictoris d, in the Beta Pictoris system. This marks a significant advancement as the planet was identified through its atmospheric 'barcode' rather than traditional imaging. Beta Pictoris d is estimated to be at least twice the mass of Jupiter and orbits its star at about 30 astronomical units.
The discovery of Beta Pictoris d helps explain anomalies observed in the system's debris disk, such as its sharp inner edge. This finding adds a crucial piece to understanding the Beta Pictoris system, a key laboratory for studying planetary system evolution. Researchers also confirmed water vapour and methane in the planet's atmosphere using Webb's instruments.
