Deep Sea Reveals Massive Ancient Whale Graveyard

An expedition to the southeastern Indian Ocean has unveiled a vast whale graveyard, stretching approximately 746 miles and reaching extreme depths. This ancient necropolis hosts hundreds of whale fossils, indicating continuous accumulation of remains for at least 5 million years. Researchers identified the site within the Diamantina Fracture Zone, an area known for its deep ridges and trenches southwest of Australia.

The extensive fossil record includes numerous beaked whales, a species with limited surface presence. Paleontologists discovered remains from both extinct genera, like *Pterocetus*, and living species, such as *Mesoplodon bowdoini*. A partial skull from a previously unknown species, named *Pterocetus diamantinae*, was also found.

Beyond the ancient remains, recent whale carcasses, known as whale falls, are actively supporting unique deep-sea ecosystems. These sunken cadavers nourish diverse scavengers like bone-eating worms and brittle stars, some of which may be new to science. This ongoing biological activity highlights the graveyard's dual role as a fossil repository and a deep-sea oasis.
