US Lithium Found: Hundreds of Years Supply!
4 May
Summary
- Vast lithium deposits in Appalachia could fuel US needs for centuries.
- Estimates reveal 2.3 million metric tons of lithium oxide in the region.
- Extraction capacity remains the main hurdle despite confirmed resource estimates.

New estimates from the United States Geological Survey indicate that lithium deposits beneath Appalachia could supply the United States for hundreds of years. Approximately 2.3 million metric tons of lithium oxide are believed to be contained within pegmatite formations across parts of the Carolinas, Maine, and New Hampshire.
This discovery holds the potential to replace around 328 years of U.S. lithium imports based on current demand. If recoverable at a commercial scale, the material could support the production of billions of electronic devices or batteries for approximately 130 million electric vehicles.
Despite the promising resource estimates, the United States currently produces a very small fraction of global lithium. Challenges such as refining capacity, environmental permits, and infrastructure development are critical hurdles to overcome for large-scale production.
Efforts are underway to boost domestic lithium production. Government funding and private investments are supporting projects, including those in Arkansas testing chemical extraction methods. Researchers are also exploring other significant domestic deposits, such as the lithium-rich clay in Nevada and Oregon.
