Untouched Roman Tomb Reveals 1,700-Year-Old Secrets

Archaeologists in Budapest, Hungary, have opened a remarkably preserved Roman sarcophagus, untouched for 1,700 years. Discovered in the northern district of Óbuda, an area known as Aquincum in Roman times, the tomb was found within a 3rd-century burial ground.

Sealed with molten lead and metal clamps, the sarcophagus had evaded looters, remaining intact. Inside, excavators found a complete skeleton accompanied by dozens of artifacts, including glass vessels, bronze figures, and 140 coins. The presence of a bone hairpin, amber jewelry, and gold-threaded fabric suggests the deceased was a young woman of considerable wealth and status.

This rare find stands out due to its pristine condition, as sarcophagi were commonly reused in the 4th century. Archaeologists believe this one was specially made for the young woman, indicating she was deeply cherished by her relatives. A thick layer of mud within the grave may still hold further treasures, including potential jewelry.
