Summary
- High schooler used NASA data for exoplanet research.
- New AI model estimates missing stellar elemental data.
- Star composition links to giant and rocky planet formation.

A high school student, Max Nguyen, has made significant strides in understanding planetary formation by analyzing stellar composition. At 17, Nguyen used data from NASA's Exoplanet Archive and the Hypatia Catalogue to investigate the relationship between a star's chemical makeup and the planets that form around it.
His research revealed that stars with giant planets tend to be richer in heavy elements, whereas rocky planets appear around stars with a broader elemental range. This suggests a complex interplay between stellar ingredients and planetary development.
Nguyen further enhanced his project by training an AI model to estimate missing elemental data for stars. This innovation could help astronomers identify promising targets for exoplanet searches more efficiently by predicting a star's composition and potential planet types.
His work, dubbed Star2Planet, represents a novel approach to exoplanet research, linking stellar-scale elemental distribution to the identification of distant worlds. Nguyen's dedication extends beyond academics, as he also co-leads a peer-tutoring program and founded WellnessPlay, an organization focused on youth mental health.
