Two of Link's three essential reaction wheels have failed, and its thrusters are only partially operational. These components are vital for controlling the spacecraft's orientation. The mission's objective is to rendezvous with and reboost Swift, an observatory in a decaying orbit expected to reenter Earth's atmosphere by early next year.
Despite these serious challenges, Katalyst Space Technologies reports that other key subsystems, including communications, propulsion, and robotics, are functioning correctly. The company is actively working to reduce the spacecraft's body rates using its electric propulsion thrusters. They plan to update guidance systems and then commence the approach to Swift in the coming weeks.
NASA had set a deadline for intervention before Swift's altitude dropped below 300 kilometers, a threshold it is expected to reach in October. Katalyst remains optimistic that Link has a viable path to successfully rendezvous with Swift, despite the current operational hurdles.
