Eclipse Flight Offers Cosmic Views Above Spain
11 Aug
Summary
- A special flight will soar 10,000 meters for the total solar eclipse.
- Researchers will observe the sun's corona from altitude, free from clouds.
- Iberia will livestream the rare celestial event for public viewing.

A specially chartered Iberia flight is scheduled to depart from Madrid at 6:45 PM on Wednesday, ascending to 10,000 meters to offer researchers an exceptional vantage point for the total solar eclipse.
The Airbus A321XLR will traverse a specially designed route over northern Spain, passing through areas like Palencia, to maximize the viewing experience of the eclipse, which will be fully visible in cities such as A Coruna, Oviedo, Bilbao, Zaragoza, and Valencia.
Onboard, scientific researchers from the Shelios project will study the sun's corona and surrounding celestial bodies, benefiting from the clear atmospheric conditions at cruising altitude. This event marks the first total solar eclipse visible from the Iberian Peninsula since 1912.
While direct participation is limited to the research team, Iberia will provide a live stream of the eclipse on its social media platforms. Separately, the UK will experience a partial solar eclipse, with the Met Office advising on optimal viewing locations and emphasizing the need for proper eye protection, as regular sunglasses are insufficient.
