An extensive network of Roman ditches has been discovered beneath the Bath Assembly Rooms, a Georgian landmark in Bath. This significant find includes numerous fragments of pottery, Roman coins, glassware, and a notable piece of a Roman military helmet. These discoveries are particularly important as they suggest Roman occupation in Bath extended into areas previously less understood, specifically to the north of the city.
Archaeologists from Wessex Archaeology noted that the finds fill a significant gap in historical knowledge about Roman Bath. The artifacts suggest the area was likely inhabited by ordinary citizens, akin to a modern city's outskirts, engaging in trade such as pottery and bread. The presence of military helmet fragments also indicates the involvement of military personnel in the settlement's development.
The shallow foundations of the Bath Assembly Rooms, built in the late 18th century, proved instrumental. Builders of that era did not excavate deeply, allowing the Roman-era ditches to remain undisturbed until recent restoration efforts. The restoration project itself is a £20 million initiative to refurbish WWII-damaged rooms and conserve Georgian features, with the Roman finds considered a bonus.
Historically, Bath, known as Aquae Sulis in Roman times, was developed around its hot springs after AD 60-61. While the main Roman bath complex is well-known, suburbs and country villas also existed. This latest discovery provides a more detailed picture of daily life in the Roman outskirts, adding a valuable layer to the city's rich history.
