Archaeologists will return to the Irchester Field School, a long-running community excavation at the well-preserved Roman town of Chester House Estate in Northamptonshire. This year's dig, running from Monday until July 3rd, will concentrate on the western part of the walled town.
This marks the first significant community excavation in this specific area since the 1870s. The project is a collaborative effort between the University of Leicester and North Northamptonshire Council. Previous discoveries at the site include six complete Roman pots that were originally made in France.
The field school provides opportunities for students, volunteers, and over 1,200 schoolchildren to engage in archaeological research. It also features public events like group tours, an open day, and Roman Fest, aiming to bring history to life.
