Pioneering pairs of ospreys, which choose to nest far from existing colonies, are crucial for the rapid spread of the species. A long-term study, published in the Journal of Animal Ecology, analyzed 54 years of data on osprey recolonisation in northern Scotland. This research reveals that these 'pioneering pairs' establish new breeding groups, significantly accelerating population expansion.
Ospreys, once common across Great Britain, disappeared as a breeding species by 1916 due to persecution. Natural recovery began in 1954, but the species spread slowly. The study highlights that while most ospreys prefer to nest near others, a small number travel over 20 kilometers to settle in unoccupied areas, driving faster recolonisation.
Conservationists can actively promote this natural recovery. By translocating young birds, as demonstrated in a project in Dorset, new populations can be established. This method successfully led to ospreys breeding in southern England in 2021, for the first time since 1847. Artificial nests are now being built in new areas to encourage further expansion along England's south coast.
This translocation project involved moving seven-week-old osprey chicks from Scotland to Dorset between 2017 and 2021. The birds were temporarily housed to imprint on the southern landscape. This initiative created 'pioneering' birds, including a male moved from Scotland and a female that travelled 200 km. The pair produced two chicks in 2021, marking a historic return for the species to southern England.
