New Viper Species Discovered in China's Medog
11 Jul
Summary
- A new Ovophis species, O. medogensis, was found in China.
- The viper has distinct physical traits and genetic markers.
- This discovery highlights Medog as a hotspot for cryptic species.

A novel pit viper species, Ovophis medogensis, has been identified in China's Xizang Autonomous Region. This discovery, published in Asian Herpetological Research, brings the total number of Ovophis species to ten. Four specimens collected in Medog County's rainforests revealed significant genetic differences from the previously recognized Chinese mountain pit viper.
Mitochondrial DNA analysis showed a 5.5 percent genetic distance, indicating a distinct evolutionary lineage. Physically, O. medogensis differs with its elongated body, darker base color, and uniquely spotted tail. It also features an orangy stripe behind the eyes, butterfly-shaped dorsal blotches, and a distinct iris pattern.
The new species inhabits elevations between 2,300 and 5,900 feet, with no overlap with the Chinese mountain pit viper. Researchers noted that geographical barriers like deep river valleys likely influenced its separate evolution. This finding reinforces Medog's reputation as a critical area for discovering undocumented species.
