Giant Dinosaur Found in Brazil
13 Mar
Summary
- New giant dinosaur, Dasosaurus tocantinensis, discovered in Brazil.
- Fossils suggest it was about 20 meters long and 1.5 meters tall.
- Species is closely related to a dinosaur found in Spain.

A significant paleontological discovery has been made in Brazil with the identification of Dasosaurus tocantinensis, a new species of giant dinosaur. Unearthed in 2021 near Davinopolis, this remarkable find includes a femur measuring about 1.5 meters, leading researchers to estimate the creature's length at roughly 20 meters. This makes Dasosaurus tocantinensis one of the largest dinosaurs ever found in South America.
The research, published in the Journal of Systematic Palaeontology, highlights the species' close relation to Garumbatitan morellensis, a dinosaur previously identified in Spain. This connection provides compelling evidence for ancient land bridges that once linked South America, Africa, and Europe approximately 120 million years ago, before the complete opening of the Atlantic Ocean. The lineage is believed to have migrated into South America from Europe, possibly via northern Africa.
