New Frog Species Found in Peru's Shrinking Cloud Forest

Scientists and indigenous guides have discovered a new frog species in the San Martin cloud forest region of Peru. Named Oreobates shankusacha, which means 'heart of the forest' in the Kichwa-Lamista language, this small amphibian is about an inch long with distinctive golden eyes. It is a nocturnal creature that inhabits the forest floor, living amongst leaves, moss, and ferns.
Researchers are already concerned about the frog's survival, as its habitat is under severe threat. Approximately 60 percent of the forest in the region has been lost due to agricultural expansion and illegal logging. This rapid habitat loss places the Oreobates shankusacha, which has a limited range, in critical danger and has led scientists to consider it endangered.
