New Fish Species Named After Sesame Street's Snuffleupagus!
15 May
Summary
- A new species of hairy ghost pipefish was discovered and named after Snuffleupagus.
- The fish, first spotted in 2001, resembles Snuffleupagus with its long snout.
- Sesame Workshop approved the naming, celebrating science and imagination.

A newly identified species of ghost pipefish has been named Solenostomus snuffleupagus, inspired by the popular Sesame Street character. Researchers were struck by the fish's long snout and hair-like filaments, which closely resemble Snuffleupagus.
First observed in 2001 by Dr. David Harasti off the coast of Papua New Guinea, the 'hairy ghost pipefish' remained undocumented for nearly two decades. Its remarkable camouflage likely contributed to its elusiveness. Targeted searches, particularly on the Great Barrier Reef, eventually yielded the necessary evidence to formally describe the species.
Sesame Workshop, the non-profit behind Sesame Street, approved the naming, viewing it as a testament to the show's core values. They emphasized the importance of connecting science with imagination and discovery, celebrating the vastness of the unexplored world.
