New Blind Snake Species Discovered in China
29 Sep
Summary
- A new species of blind snake, Indotyphlops gyirongensis, was found.
- The discovery was made on China's Qinghai-Xizang Plateau.
- The snake was identified using physical features and genetic data.
A previously unknown species of blind snake has been identified on China's Qinghai-Xizang Plateau. Researchers have named this new species Indotyphlops gyirongensis, after examining its unique physical features and conducting detailed genetic analysis. The discovery was made in Gyirong, Xizang, near the border with Nepal.
The Gyirong blind snake was identified through molecular phylogenetic analysis combined with morphological comparisons. It was found to be a distinct lineage within the Indotyphlops genus and is the sister species to Indotyphlops albiceps. Genetic divergence was noted, with significant differences observed compared to related species.
This new species is currently known only from Xizang, China. However, its proximity to Nepal suggests it may also inhabit areas across the border. The discovery represents a significant addition to China's herpetofauna and the third blind snake species found on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau.
