Near Misses Reveal Hidden Road Dangers
27 Aug
Summary
- Near-miss vehicle data can predict future crashes.
- Sydney and Parramatta areas recorded high incidents.
- Proactive road safety measures could save lives.

Monitoring frequent vehicle swerving and braking can help authorities pinpoint dangerous locations and enhance road safety proactively. Researchers analyzed severe braking and swerving data from 700,000 vehicles in New South Wales between April 2020 and December 2021.
This analysis revealed an average of 1000 near-miss incidents daily, with the Greater Sydney area, particularly Parramatta, recording over 40,000 and 45,000 incidents respectively. These locations showed a strong correlation with known accident black spots.
Many areas with frequent near misses are currently not recognized as dangerous by authorities. The current reactive approach involves waiting for crashes to occur before implementing safety measures.
Instead, proactive interventions such as reducing speed limits, improving infrastructure, or increasing law enforcement in areas with high near-miss rates could prevent future accidents and save lives. Data indicates a growing trend in near misses across Australia, with road deaths also reaching a 12-year high in 2025.
While some experts express caution regarding the predictive accuracy of near-miss data alone, they acknowledge its potential as an early-warning signal that complements traditional crash data. Understanding the context of harsh maneuvers is crucial, as they can be triggered by various factors including pedestrian presence or unpredictable driving by others.
