NASA Gateway Canceled, Subcontractor Lays Off 70

NASA's ambitious lunar Gateway project has been indefinitely halted, impacting its development and associated workforce. Paragon Space Development Corp., a key subcontractor responsible for essential life support systems for the Habitation and Logistics Outpost (HALO) module, announced a significant restructuring on August 11th. This restructuring led to the layoff of 70 employees across its facilities in Arizona, Colorado, and Texas.

The decision to halt Gateway, a planned outpost in lunar orbit to support Artemis missions, was announced by NASA in March. Paragon's contract was terminated by Northrop Grumman, the prime contractor for the HALO module. Paragon expects compensation for closeout costs and will retain intellectual property rights for its developed life support technologies.

Despite this setback, Paragon views the cancellation as a change to one program, not a fatal blow to its business. The company plans to leverage its expertise in life support systems for other government and commercial projects, including potential applications for NASA's future lunar base plans. Meanwhile, Northrop Grumman is exploring options to repurpose HALO technologies and the module itself for upcoming lunar infrastructure demonstration missions.
