Summary
- Musical training enhances attention and vigilance in children.
- Musicians showed fewer lapses in concentration during tasks.
- Music may counteract attention decline from screen time.

Musical training can significantly enhance cognitive abilities like attention and vigilance in children and young adults, according to a study published in the British Journal of Psychology. Researchers found that individuals who had learned an instrument were less prone to losing focus during demanding tasks.
The study involved 268 participants aged eight to 34, divided into musicians and non-musicians. They completed computer-based attention tests, including one requiring participants to identify arrow direction amidst distracting signals. Musicians consistently demonstrated quicker responses and fewer attention lapses.
This research offers a potential countermeasure to the observed decline in concentration linked to pervasive social media, video streaming, and smartphone use among young people. The authors propose that the complex cognitive processes involved in learning music—such as mastering rhythm, reading notation, and refining technique—actively exercise and refine attentional skills.
However, the study's authors caution that the effects are moderate, and musical training does not guarantee a dramatic cognitive transformation. They also suggest that individuals with better attention might be more inclined to pursue musical training, creating a reciprocal relationship that further bolsters attentional capabilities by enhancing motivation and effort willingness.
