Professor Yu Deng of the University of Chicago has received a Fields Medal, an award recognizing mathematicians under 40, for his significant contributions to understanding fluid mechanics. Deng's work offers a direct pathway to understanding the universe's fundamental operations.
His recent achievements include deriving the wave kinetic equation and, crucially, solving a major part of Hilbert's sixth problem. This involved finding a way to derive the Boltzmann equation, which models particle behavior, from basic laws of motion.
Deng, originally from Shenzhen, China, pursued mathematics at Peking University and MIT. He returned to his studies of partial differential equations around 2018, leading to breakthroughs with collaborators Zaher Hani and Xiao Ma. Their work, published in 2024, addresses the complex challenge of understanding collective particle behavior from individual motions.
