India Launches First Plant Cell Fermentation Center

India has launched its first Centre of Excellence dedicated to plant cell fermentation technology, a joint initiative by Herbalife International India Pvt. Ltd. and IIT Madras. Inaugurated on June 22, this facility is set to bolster research in sustainable biomanufacturing and accelerate the creation of advanced plant-based health and wellness products.

The Centre will act as a nexus for researchers, students, entrepreneurs, and industry experts to collaborate on translating scientific breakthroughs into practical applications. Its focus includes the sustainable production of herbal biomass, enriched extracts, and high-value plant compounds, thereby strengthening India's self-reliance in bio-manufacturing.

Equipped with state-of-the-art plant cell cultivation systems, downstream processing technologies, and metabolomics platforms, the facility supports technology transfer, skill development, and start-up incubation. Panel discussions at the inauguration highlighted global opportunities and the evolving regulatory landscape for fermentation-derived herbal products.

This initiative aligns with national programs like BioE3 and Atmanirbhar Bharat, promoting innovation, reducing import dependency, and encouraging environmentally sustainable manufacturing practices. Leaders from IIT Madras and Herbalife expressed confidence that the Centre will push the boundaries of plant cell bioprocessing for societal impact and global leadership in next-generation products.
