Their findings pinpoint non-renewable tissues and accumulating somatic mutations as the primary biological limits to longevity. Specifically, the inability of brain and heart tissues to regenerate contributes most significantly to reduced lifespans.
Even if other aging factors were eliminated, somatic mutations alone would theoretically reduce a human's lifespan from an extended 1,759 years to 156 years. This highlights DNA damage as a critical factor.
The researchers now plan to investigate other aging aspects like mitochondrial dysfunction and telomere shortening. The ultimate goal is to prioritize future therapies for reversing aging, thereby improving human lives and overall well-being.
