Horned screamers are extraordinary birds found in the tropical lowland freshwater habitats of northern and central South America. These non-migratory residents, known for their loud calls and unique physical attributes, inhabit countries including Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela. They are often spotted near wooded riverbanks and wet savannas, where they feed on plants and, as juveniles, insects.
These large birds, weighing around 7 pounds with a 5-foot wingspan, are characterized by a horn-like projection on their heads and, more notably, sharp spurs on their wings. These spurs, measuring up to 2 inches long, are made of fused carpal bones and keratin, serving as formidable weapons. While their head horns are ornamental and break off easily, the wing spurs are actively used in defense and territorial disputes.
Horned screamers live in groups of five to ten individuals and fiercely defend their territories. When intruders are detected, the group cooperates to drive them away, often initiating fights with their wing spurs. Males also engage in brutal combat with these spurs to establish mating rights, showcasing the bird's aggressive nature despite its herbivorous diet.
