Glass Teapots Brew Healthier Tea, Study Finds
15 Mar
Summary
- Glass teapots yield the highest concentration of health-boosting antioxidants.
- Earthenware pots produce the most well-rounded flavor in brewed tea.
- Porcelain teapots rated poorly for flavor and antioxidant levels.

Scientists have discovered that the material of a teapot can significantly impact both the health benefits and taste of tea. Research conducted by Taiwanese scientists involved brewing 585 cups of tea in five different teapot materials: earthenware, glass, stainless steel, silica gel, and porcelain.
The study revealed that glass and silica teapots produced tea with the highest concentration of catechins, which are antioxidants that help protect against cell damage. This finding suggests that brewing in glass may offer superior health advantages.
However, for tea enthusiasts who prioritize flavor, earthenware teapots emerged as the top performers, delivering the most rounded taste. Glass and stainless steel also rated well for flavor. Conversely, porcelain teapots, while visually appealing, received the lowest scores for both flavor and antioxidant content, and also cooled the tea most rapidly.
