Summary
- GLONASS positioning accuracy will improve from 8 to 2.8 meters.
- The upgrade is slated for completion by 2027.
- Roscosmos is developing the next-generation GLONASS constellation.
Russia's GLONASS satellite navigation system is poised for a substantial enhancement in its positioning accuracy, which is projected to improve from the current eight meters to an impressive 2.8 meters by the year 2027.
This significant leap in precision is enabled by the development of the next-generation GLONASS constellation. Roscosmos CEO Dmitry Bakanov confirmed that the technical architecture for this advanced system is currently taking shape. The upgrade is expected to bolster the system's overall stability and reliability, fostering the advancement of new navigation technologies.
In addition to navigation system improvements, Roscosmos has also created a highly detailed map of the universe. This extensive cosmic map has expanded scientific knowledge from hundreds of thousands to millions of stars and black holes, according to Bakanov.
