Subsequent testing confirmed the absence of the Can f 1 protein in the dogs' saliva and dander. The lead scientist has personally verified the dogs' allergen-free status by living with one of them for 18 months without experiencing any allergic symptoms.
This advancement follows similar gene editing efforts in cats, demonstrating a growing application of this technology for allergen reduction. Experts view this development positively, seeing gene editing as a tool to solve real-world problems and enhance the human-animal bond. Kindred Companion Sciences plans to extend this technology to more breeds, with a focus on creating allergy-free service dogs, by developing "founder animals" for future breeding.
Research and development were conducted in licensed facilities under veterinary supervision, with no off-target edits detected in the gene-edited dogs.
