Study Reveals Physical Decline Starts at 35
31 Jan
Summary
- Physical capacity peaks between ages 26-36 for all.
- Decline begins after 35, regardless of exercise.
- Capacity dropped up to 48% between ages 35-63.

New research from Karolinska Institutet indicates that physical fitness reaches its zenith between the ages of 26 and 36 for both men and women. Following this peak, a gradual decline in physical capacity and muscle endurance commences around age 35.
This deterioration occurs irrespective of an individual's exercise habits. The study highlights that inactive individuals may experience a more pronounced drop in physical function. Between the ages of 35 and 63, physical capacity can decrease by as much as 48%, a decline that starts slowly but accelerates over time.
Swedish research tracking participants from age 16 to 63 has been ongoing since the 1970s. Scientists are now investigating the underlying mechanisms of this performance decrease and exploring how physical activity influences the rate of decline, even if it cannot halt it entirely.
