Rhino Sees Again After Groundbreaking Surgery

A significant milestone in veterinary medicine was achieved on February 18, 2026, when a rhinoceros underwent cataract surgery in the United States for the first time. Dr. Caryn Plummer, a veterinary ophthalmologist from the University of Florida, conducted the groundbreaking procedure on Kendi, a 27-year-old white rhinoceros residing at Disney's Animal Kingdom. This rare collaboration between Walt Disney World and UF's College of Veterinary Medicine highlights advancements in specialized animal care.

Kendi, a cherished resident of Animal Kingdom, is the park's first-born white rhino and has a significant lineage, having birthed six calves. Her care team had spent years training her for medical procedures, making the complex surgery possible. Disney veterinarians first noted Kendi's developing cataracts in December 2019, initiating a rigorous monitoring and training regimen that included custom-designed protective eye masks by March 2024.

Following the surgery, Kendi experienced a remarkable recovery, with her vision significantly improving over the subsequent months. By March 10, 2026, she had the protective mask removed and resumed her normal behaviors. Kendi was returned to the Kilimanjaro Safaris attraction savanna on March 25, 2026, allowing guests to see her once more. Dr. Plummer expressed satisfaction with the collaboration, noting its success in enhancing Kendi's quality of life.
