A significant 18-month project has been launched to investigate the mental challenges faced by emergency response workers operating vehicles under blue lights. This collaborative effort between Devon and Cornwall Police and the Open University seeks to quantify the 'cognitive workload' – the mental effort required – during urgent drives.
Researchers aim to understand how various factors, including radio communications and onboard computer systems, compete for a driver's attention. "There's an awful lot that a police driver needs to think about whilst they're responding to an emergency," noted police driver support team manager Matt Butler.
The initiative's objective is to gain deeper insights into how this cognitive load affects emergency drivers. Subsequently, the findings will be used to create a practical support tool designed to help these essential workers better manage the pressures of their demanding roles.
